Guilty pleasures

guiltyWe all have those little secrets, the ones we hope no one finds out, right?  Whether it’s something you enjoy doing, eating or watching that you probably shouldn’t, but it’s just so much fun!  I’ll share a couple of mine with you and I’d love to know what your guilty pleasures are, too.  Whether it’scross stitch or watching cat videos on YouTube for hours… I won’t judge.

While it’s no secret I watch TV and there are even a couple of shows I will schedule my social activities around, sometimes I have been known to watch programs that I really shouldn’t.

No, I’m not talking about smut (hey, that’s part of my job!) or even “The Bachelorette.” I abhor reality shows, but there is a subset of reality-type shows that grabs my attention and I have to force myself to turn off the television or I can sit and watch for hours.

While I won’t be caught dead watching Big Brother or Blind Date, I have to admit I love seeing real people in real situations, not ridiculous fake scenarios that those shows provide.

One Saturday I flipped through channels on the (then-new) satellite TV to discover a show on HGTV where people are trying to sell their houses and the show puts hidden cameras up during an open house. The homeowners cringe at the candid comments of the prospective buyers and then get advice about how to fix the worst problems. Then we get to see more candid comments in the AFTER portion. Maybe it’s the fact that these are genuine people trying to deal with their own reality that makes the show interesting. Of course, who doesn’t like to watch people take critique on camera? I also enjoy seeing how the decorators figure out how to deal with problems quickly and cheaply.

How Clean is Your House? I’m a messy person. Very messy. When I was younger I was constantly getting grounded by my parents for my room being messy. At college, the dorm maid said my room looked like it had “bomb damage.” Enough said. But imagine my delight to discover there are people FAR worse than me in this regard! Just one episode of this show puts me in a good mood, and honestly makes me want to do some housework. The hosts are two hilarious British women who have as much guts as common sense. There was one episode about a woman with 20 birds who let them fly free around the house. There was bird poop everywhere, but these two ladies dove right in and bravely helped her clean up her problems. Yuck!!  Somehow they manage to do it without making the housework-challenged homeowner feel like a real idiot. There are also plenty  of good housekeeping tips that are MacGuyver-approved. That means you can pretty much find everything already around the house.

I won’t get started on the show with the dietitian, but it’s amazing just what people will eat and how much of it!

  1. LOL A few years ago I would have said m/m romance was my guilty pleasure! Now that I write it, though… Um… I suppose… All right, I’m just going to say it: Internet porn. ::waits for the laughter to stop and the jaws to get realigned:: I mean, if we’re being honest, that’s the *only* thing that I actually *do* hide from hubby, so yeah, I guess that qualifies it as a guilty pleasure. It’s strictly done in the name of research. ::cough:: Seriously. Honestly! C’mon, don’t you believe me??? But seriously…yeah. ::shrugs:: I’mma freak. 😛

My guilty pleasures? Watching the soap opera As the World Turns, followed by participating on a message board (VanHansis.net – he plays gay boy Luke Snyder on the soap).

I would have to say slashy fanfic is a guilty pleasure that I would never tell my RL friends about. I love real person slash and that’s a little hard to explain to people …
