Yesterday I did a panel with
ceciliatan on self/e-publishing at Azkatraz. It was part of the MPA program which was a series of panels and discussions about the business and commercial response to the Potter phenomenon. We only had a handful of people at our panel, but it went quite well and I think most people learned a lot about how self- and e-publishing has become more accepted as a way to break into traditional publishing, if that’s your goal. We discussed lots of way to get your work in front of others and build an audience first, which becomes a pre-existing market when you do start subbing to publishers.
Besides the panel, it was a good opportunity to introduce myself and my work to a new group of people, since I’ve never been part of the Harry Potter fandom.
Best of all: I met the book editor from TIME Magazine and mentioned the huge market of m/m romance and how the majority of readers are women and much of it is written by women. He hadn’t been aware of this and found it fascinating. I’ve got him interested enough that I think he may do an article on it for TIME. How cool is that?
