\u201cYou remember that plane crash in Turkey at the end of last month? With Shelton Matthews on board?\u201d<\/p>\n

Reed gave Tom his full attention now. \u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat hasn\u2019t<\/em> been in the papers is that the cargo consisted of a few things that used to be on display in the Iraq National Museum.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re fucking kidding me. After this many years?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t get that juicy tidbit from Interpol until last week. We\u2019ve got surveillance on Matthews\u2019 home in upstate New York, and I\u2019ve got two guys from the New York field office scheduled to go in as insurance appraisers, but they don\u2019t have your expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n

This could be the case of a lifetime. Tens of thousands of objects were still unaccounted for after the looting of the museum during the US invasion back in 2003. Then again, Matthews might only have amassed a pile of junk from Saddam\u2019s vulgar palace. They wouldn\u2019t know until they did a thorough search.<\/p>\n

Reed waited too long to reply.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe items in the plane crash included two solid gold Babylonian goblets. Part of a set of six. I\u2019d like you on the team to find the other four.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think Matthews has them?\u201d Reed\u2019s belly tingled with excitement. The expanding frown on Trent\u2019s face meant he\u2019d noticed. Reed moved out of Trent\u2019s range of vision.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf not, he\u2019s been looking for them. He\u2019s not the sort to leave a set incomplete.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reed shifted his weight from foot to foot. \u201cHell yeah. I\u2019m on my way in.\u201d He turned and spotted Trent holding his mother\u2019s evening wrap. His gut twisted again as Trent glanced over. \u201cHang on a couple of minutes, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

Reed stepped back into the living room. \u201cIt\u2019s White, my boss. There\u2019s a case he needs me for\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA holiday-related crime?\u201d Trent asked, with just enough acid that Reed felt it like he\u2019d been burned.<\/p>\n

Laura wrung her hands and turned a worried gaze to Reed. \u201cOh, Reed, please be careful. I\u2019m going to worry about you the whole time. I don\u2019t think I can go to dinner if you\u2019re about to do something dangerous.\u201d She turned to Trent. \u201cLet\u2019s change the plans for another night.\u201d She grasped at Reed\u2019s arm, the tight grip telegraphing concern.<\/p>\n

Reed hadn\u2019t expected that reaction from her. The fear in her eyes cut through him like a rusty blade, far more painfully than Trent\u2019s anger. He\u2019d expected to disappoint her, but even that felt wrong right now. He was touched by her concern.<\/p>\n

\u201cTom, can you manage without me? We\u2019ve got plans, and unless it\u2019s absolutely necessary\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo I have the right number?\u201d White asked, though his chuckle had lost its earlier mirth.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. But, is there any way this can wait a few days?\u201d Reed couldn\u2019t believe the words had come out of his mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeriously?\u201d<\/p>\n

Reed guessed they had. \u201cYeah. Till after Christmas? Don\u2019t insurance companies get Christmas off?\u201d<\/p>\n

It was White\u2019s turn for a long pause. Reed was tempted to recant, but White spoke before he had the chance. \u201cYes. That\u2019ll be fine. Come in on the twenty-sixth, and you should be back the following day. Will that suit?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. The twenty-sixth works better.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll e-mail you the travel arrangements, and we can do the briefing on the plane.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks. And Merry Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled down at Laura, who looked relieved; then he took the wrap from Trent and helped Laura into it.<\/p>\n

Trent came up behind Reed, whispered \u201cI love you\u201d into his ear, and slipped a hand around his waist in a quick embrace.<\/p>\n
