Excerpt<\/h2>\n

They had the weekend to settle into Fort Sam Houston before Reed had to report for duty Monday morning, as \u201cRex Atwater.\u201d Since he couldn\u2019t start snooping right away, this investigation could take a lot longer than Trent had realized. Tom White was pretty smart sending Trent along so Reed could take his time and not risk blowing his cover just to take shortcuts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever is running this ring is in it for the long haul,\u201d Reed had said before they left LA. \u201cThey\u2019ve been sitting on the gold items for years before starting to move them again. They\u2019re not in a huge hurry, and I\u2019ll have to bide my time and observe without tipping anyone off.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, Trent kissed Reed and waved as he left their little house to report to work.<\/p>\n

It took less than a week for Trent to see that Army life\u2014at least life as a supply unit grunt\u2014didn\u2019t suit Reed at all. He came home in the evenings frustrated, but they couldn\u2019t risk talking openly about it. Instead they went for walks around the neighborhood when they needed to talk.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had forgotten how damn stupid most of the Army is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStupid how?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t get me started. Sometimes it seems we\u2019re supposed to move things around just for the sake of moving them and for no real purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not your real job. Don\u2019t let it get to you so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t help it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the job\u2019s that easy, then you should have plenty of time to use looking at things that are out of place.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s harder than it sounds, because nothing makes a lick of sense. I can\u2019t tell what\u2019s wrong and what\u2019s just fucked up the Army way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve only been there three days. Give it some time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI may kill someone before the end of the week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess it\u2019s not a good time to mention that at some point I\u2019ll have to host some of the spouses for coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs long as I\u2019m not home when it happens, I don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re very curious about you.\u201d Trent grinned at Reed\u2019s discomfort at the thought of being the center of attention of a bunch of Army wives.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell make something up so they aren\u2019t curious.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll tell them you\u2019re gay.\u201d<\/p>\n
