KC Burn explains the dilemma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve done this a couple of times, as it amuses me\u2026 the romantic hero cage match.\u00a0 Today, I&#8217;m pitting vampires vs. aliens.\u00a0 I have a personal interest in this one, because I&#8217;ve written about both.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.loose-id.com\/images\/KCB_BloodRelations_coverlg.jpg?resize=200%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>Which are your favourite heroes?\u00a0 Vampires, right?\u00a0 I certainly get the dark, broody, angsty appeal of vampires.\u00a0\u00a0 But I have a hang-up with vampires as the romantic hero.\u00a0 They&#8217;re dead, ergo &#8211; no heartbeat.\u00a0 No heartbeat means no blood flow to some very important places, defeating the purpose, unless you&#8217;re interested in platonic, erectile-ly challenged love affairs (and generally, I&#8217;m not).\u00a0 Would ED meds work on the undead, do you suppose?\u00a0 Be a decent romantic comedy, I imagine!\u00a0 Anyway, despite that, readers love them and vampires have done the wild thing with just about every species of supernatural being out there.\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe not zombies.\u00a0 Talk about clash of the failing body parts!\u00a0 But seriously, they&#8217;ve done everyone and everything!\u00a0 Like Torchwood&#8217;s Captain Jack Harkness, vampires as a species seem to be omnisexual.\u00a0 (Someone\u00a0may have re-watched a few episodes this weekend!)<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.contentreserve.com\/ImageType-100\/2096-1\/%7BC4819BBD-7675-4383-A402-D560DEC1DF4A%7DImg100.jpg?resize=162%2C256\" alt=\"\" width=\"162\" height=\"256\" \/>Aliens have their own host of issues as romantic heroes.\u00a0 First, they need to be appealing, sexually, to humans.\u00a0 The odds of that happening are &#8211; no pun intended &#8212; astronomical!\u00a0 But even assuming you have mutual zing, the bits that are supposed to feel good when rubbed up against another\u2026 well, they have to match up to some degree.\u00a0 Hooks or spikes or claws of any description could be an issue, as could bodily fluids that are caustic or otherwise incompatible with human physiology.\u00a0 Aliens are tricky as romantic heroes.\u00a0 You can&#8217;t get away with the original Star Trek grease-paint aliens anymore!\u00a0 I like aliens though.\u00a0 The challenge of developing an appealing alien hero is tempting both as a romance author and a sci-fi geek.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, for me, the alien hero edges out the vampire hero, but I&#8217;m probably in the minority.\u00a0 And hey &#8211; here&#8217;s my tie-in.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loose-id.com\/MIA-Case-Files-Blood-Relations.aspx\">MIA Case Files: Blood Relations from Loose Id<\/a> is about vampires, as bad guys (my preference).\u00a0 I&#8217;ve also got a futuristic romance,<a href=\"http:\/\/ebooks.carinapress.com\/139C2C22-1220-4362-AC22-EE82180CCDC3\/10\/134\/en\/ContentDetails.htm?ID=C4819BBD-7675-4383-A402-D560DEC1DF4A\"> Spice &#8216;n&#8217; Solace, from Carina Press<\/a>.\u00a0 No alien nookie in that one, but just wait until July!<\/p>\n<p>So, which one do you like &#8211; vampires or aliens?\u00a0 Have you got any specific favourites?<\/p>\n<p>You can visit KC Burn online at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kcburn.com\/blog\/\">http:\/\/kcburn.com\/blog\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s first installment in Backlist Strikes Back asks not an age-old question, but a very new one.
